Consider how mindfulness can help you as a student

Mindfulness is a pathway towards increased awareness and understanding and greater acceptance of yourself and others. It is about:

  • Being fully present in the moment
  • Focusing your attention - and gently bringing your attention back to that focus when it strays

Here are six reasons why mindfulness can be useful for students. Consider which, if any, apply to you.

Focus

We are good at finding ways to put tasks off until later, either because we want to do other things instead or because we decide we are bored or can't do it.

Focus

We can get to the end of a page and not remember a word we have read, or take lots of notes in a lecture without thinking about or absorbing the information.

Focus

We sometimes let our focus on grades and results get out of balance. We don't always appreciate the benefits of stretching our mind, and might switch off when studying feels hard.

Focus

There are so many demands on time, and it is easy to get distracted by social media and the internet. There are new people to meet and opportunities to choose between, and it can be easy to lose a sense of calm and focus.

Focus

It is a big investment of time and money, so there can be pressure to succeed. Study is designed to stretch us intellectually, and sometimes that feels too much. Waiting for grades and exam results can be nerve-wracking, and it can be hard to receive feedback - even when it could help us.

Focus
  • Taking notes for future reference
  • Planning for the future
  • Forthcoming deadlines and exams
  • Making choices about next year's study
  • Securing a graduate job

All of these have a place, but they can detract from the enjoyment of study in the moment.
