Find the joy in learning

Generate good feelings towards study

Books

There is enjoyment to be found in learning anything, if you are open to it.

Experts in any topic or activity find matters of interest and enjoyment that others overlook. Once they start to look for it, people find all kinds of things to enjoy about studying.

What do you enjoy about your studies?

Check the box next to the statements that resonate with you to add them to a list of 'Favourites', which you can then save to your journal or download.

Create a 'joy' list

Looking for things that you like or enjoy, or for which you feel grateful, triggers a chemical reaction in the brain, encouraging it to release the 'feel-good' hormone, serotonin.

Jot down at least 20 things that you enjoy about learning, studying, your course and being a student more generally. You could use the list above as a starting point. Then look for more things. Make it a long list.

Rediscover the joy of study

In future, if you are feeling at all negative about your studies, you may welcome a boost to your enthusiasm. Re-read your list, absorb what it says and bring your focus back to the aspects of study that have brought you fulfilment and enjoyment. You may not feel as much joy at that point, but your list may help you maintain a more balanced perspective about your studies.
