Term Description
marking criteria

Standards against which tutors assess students’ work. Marking criteria reflect the particular requirements of the work, including the level of study and other factors such as intended learning outcomes.

median

The middle number in a sequence arranged in order of size.

memory, long-term

Memory that may last anywhere between a few days and many years.

memory, motor

The memory of a sequence of muscle movements, such as when handwriting.

mentor schemes

Mentor schemes involve a more experienced student or tutor helping you along a path that they have personal knowledge of.

methodology

The system of methods and principles used to carry out your research.

mnemonic

A learning aid intended to assist memory. A common approach is to make a new ‘word’ from the first letters of each of several keywords.

mock exam

A practice exam paper taken under conditions which are as close to the real exam as possible. Some academic colleges and universities arrange mock exams for their students but you can also use past exam papers to recreate an exam at home, in the library or with a group of fellow students.

mode

The number that occurs most often in a set.

model

A generalised (and sometimes simplified) description of a system or process, used in discussing mechanisms and in making predictions.
